HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) -Mark Patton scored 17 points to lead Marshall to a 72-66 win over East Carolina on Wednesday.
Markel Humphrey was the only other player scoring in double figures for Marshall (9-10, 2-4 C-USA). Humphrey scored 10 of his 11 points in the first half.
East Carolina (7-13, 1-6) got 15 points apiece from Jeremy Ingram and Corey Rouse, who also grabbed nine rebounds.
Junior Japhet McNeil distributed 11 assists and in the process established a new single season record for assists at ECU by handing out his 123rd of the year, eclipsing his own school record of 122 set as a sophomore last season. McNeil has tallied 131 assists through 20 games this season.
The victory halted Marshall's four-game conference losing streak and a three-game home losing streak. East Carolina lost its sixth straight road contest.
The Pirates went on a 7-2 run to draw within three points, 69-66, with 31 seconds remaining, but Patton hit a pair of free-throws with 11 seconds left to seal the victory.
Marshall shot 49 percent from the floor but went the last 3:41 without a field goal.
The Thundering Herd never trailed over the final 37 minutes of play, but East Carolina tied the game at 36-36 early in the second half on Courtney Captain's pair of consecutive 3-pointers as part of an 8-0 run. Mark Dorris hit a layup to give Marshall the lead for good.
After East Carolina scored the first five points of the game, Marshall reeled off a 19-4 run and took a 33-28 lead at halftime.
