GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina resumed its spring practice schedule with a light workout conducted in helmets and shorts Wednesday afternoon at the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
Coupled with their full-intensity practice in pads Monday afternoon, Wednesday's session put the finishing touches on the Pirates' preparation efforts for the program's second official intra-squad scrimmage scheduled for Friday afternoon at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
"Today was a teaching day," head coach Skip Holtz said. "We were able to spend the majority of our time on individual work with a corrective mindset. We had the opportunity to throw it around a little more and key on execution."
In addition, Holtz and his staff developed and released ECU's first public depth chart Wednesday afternoon prior to player meetings and the workout.
Injuries and position changes played a role in the make-up of East Carolina's initial formal two-deep of the spring. The Pirates' offensive unit currently has at least three players who are being kept out contact drills because of nagging injuries or rehabilitation work, including wide receiver Aundrae Allison, running back Chris Johnson and center Drew Sutton. Defensively, ECU is missing a pair of linebackers in Pierre Bell and Jarrett Wiggins, and end Marcus Hands from its current chart.
"The first depth chart is based primarily on performance during the first scrimmage," Holtz explained. "No doubt, it will probably change as early as this Friday. It's on ongoing process so no one is really entrenched at one spot at this point."
Holtz' recent position changes are also visible within the listings, as junior Josh Coffman (OT to OG), junior Fred Hicks (DT to C), sophomore Davon Drew (QB to TE) and senior Patrick Dosh (LB to FB) hold down spots on offense while sophomore Zach Slate (LB to DE) and senior Jamar Flournoy (LB to FS) have earned placings at defensive positions they have not experienced action at during a regular season game.
"There are some great battles going on out there," Holtz continued. "I'd say our linebacking position has been very competitive. Quentin Cotton had a great first scrimmage and the junior college transfers (Orlando Farrow, Danny Muhwezi, Fred Wilson) have progressed at a rapid rate in our system. I thought Patrick Pinkney and Brett Clay did a lot of good things last Friday but we'll go at it again this Friday and see who is the most effective."
Holtz indicated all levels of East Carolina's depth chart will be utilized during this week's contest, which is tentatively scripted for a minimum of 80 plays.
"I think we're all looking forward to having another chance to compete in game-like conditions Friday," Holtz added. "This one will be a more traditional scrimmage compared to what we did a week ago.
After Friday's scrimmage, which will serve as the Pirates' 12th practice day of the spring, ECU will have just two more afternoon sessions remaining before completing its workout schedule with the playing of the Purple-Gold Game April 8.
