
Bascom Shuts Down Pirates in 8-0 Win

ORLANDO, FLA. - Junior Tim Bascom tossed his first complete game of the season and the fourth of his career Friday night as he allowed just two hits in an 8-0 shutout of East Carolina in Conference USA play at Jay Bergman Field.
Bascom, the Preseason C-USA Pitcher-of-the-Year, faced 27 batters, walked one and struck out nine, while lowing his ERA to 1.22 on the season.
UCF plated its first run in the bottom of the second when Chadd Hartman punched a shot over shortstop Dale Mollenhauer's head to score Kiko Vazquez from second base. Vazquez started the inning with a single to left field, which was followed by a Dave Lambert single to right setting up Hartman's RBI single.
Pirate (19-13, 2-5) starter T.J. Hose (3-3) suffered his third loss of the season after working 3 1/3 innings allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits. Sophomore Chris Powell tossed 3 2/3 innings in relief giving up three runs on two hits while striking out two before allowing Michael Hill to close out the game.
The Golden Knights (20-13, 3-1) collected eleven hits on the night getting three from Dave Lambert, and two each from Vazquez, Hartman and Matt Lambert. Hartman led UCF with three RBI.
Freshman Ryan Wood, who extended his hit streak to six games with a single in the fifth, collected one of the two Pirate hits with Ryan Tousley getting the other.
In the bottom of the fourth, UCF pushed four runs across to extend its lead to 5-0. Dave Lambert got the scoring underway with a single up the middle that scored Vazquez. Dave Dinatale doubled putting runners at second and third with no outs. After a Hartman strike out and Eric Kallstrom walked, Matt Lambert's single to right scored two more. Kallstrom scored the final run of the inning on a Pirate fielding error.
UCF scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to close the game at 8-0.
The two teams will resume the series Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. at Jay Bergman Field.
