GREENVILLE, N.C. - Virginia Tech won the East Carolina Invitational sponsored by City Hotel & Bistro after a 3-1 victory over host East Carolina Saturday night at Minges Coliseum. Freshman Taylor Parrish earned tournament MVP honors with 44 total kills and eight digs in three matches.
East Carolina (1-2) opened up the match hot, scoring eight straight points before forcing a Virginia Tech timeout. The Hokies (3-0) fought back midway through the game, but junior outside hitter Kelley Wernert's seven kills helped the Pirates take game one 30-27. The Hokies and Pirates battled in the final three games, but Virginia Tech won all three, taking the match and the tournament title.
The Pirates tallied 82 digs in the loss, while the Hokies tallied 66. Wernert collected her third straight double-double with 17 kills and 12 digs. Freshman outside hitter Stephanie Turner also recorded a double-double, on 12 kills and 21 digs, both career-highs. Turner added seven blocks on the night. Sophomore middle blocker Mignon Dubenion tallied a career-high seven blocks, earning her all-tournament honors. Freshman setter Hannah Fenker collected a career-best 14 digs on the night.
Sarah Munoz led the Hokies with 14 kills, while Parrish and Katie Esbrook each added 11. Amanda Cloyd recorded 22 digs on the evening. Michelle Lang and Esbrook were also named to the all-tournament team.
In the third match of the day, Furman defeated William & Mary 3-0. The Paladins (2-1) were led by Chibuzo Aguocha, who tallied 17 kills and nine digs. Stephanie Smith tallied 18 digs, while Courtney Stewardson recorded 11 and Whitney Purser adding 10. The Tribe (0-3) were led by Lindsay Pflugner who had 12 kills and 13 digs. Jill Nowadly collected 13 digs on the night.
East Carolina returns to action Sept. 1 as the team travels to Charlottesville, Va. for the University of Virginia Tournament. The Pirates will face Wright State Friday night at 5 p.m. and will play Georgetown Sat., Sept. 2 at 11 a.m. before facing host Virginia Saturday night at 7 p.m.
