GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina swept intra-state rival Campbell Tuesday night at Minges Coliseum. Kelley Wernert and Mignon Dubenion led the Pirates offensively with 15 kills each.
The Pirates downed the Camels in three straight games, 30-19, 30-24, 30-23, for the team's second straight shutout victory. With the win, ECU improves to 6-5 on the season, 3-2 at home while Campbell drops to 3-8.
ECU opened the match on fire, hitting .400 in the first game, led by Dubenion, who had a perfect hitting percentage. The Pirates held Campbell to just .161 hitting in the opening game. Dubenion finished the match hitting .591 with 15 kills and four block assists. Wernert tallied her sixth double-double of the year with 15 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Peyton Thompson recorded double-digit kills for the first time in her career tonight, with 11.
"I thought it was really nice for Peyton to step in and perform the way she did tonight," head coach Chris Rushing said.
Rachel Templin led the Camels with nine kills and three total blocks. Campbell was led defensively by Melissa Harvey who registered nine digs on the night.
The Pirates out-hit the Camels, .373 to .133 on the night, as ECU tallied 56 kills to Campbell's 33.
"Once again, we were very encouraged by the student support," Rushing added. "We hope that they will come out this weekend and be just as loud. We play our first conference match Thursday night and will need our fan support."
The Pirates return to action this Thursday evening, Sept. 14 as they face Marshall in the team's first Conference USA match, and the first match of the ECU Classic sponsored by Holiday Inn Express. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Minges Coliseum. The tournament continues on Friday, with three matches and concludes on Saturday, with two matches. Wisconsin-Green Bay and Grambling State are also participating in this weekend's tournament.
