GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina swept Grambling State in the final match of the 2006 East Carolina Classic sponsored by Holiday Inn Express Saturday afternoon. The win marks ECU's fifth shutout of the season, and the second of the tournament. The Pirates improve to 8-6 on the year while Grambling State falls to 3-9.
Mignon Dubenion and Kelley Wernert each tallied 13 kills in the win, leading the team. Jaime Bevan recorded six kills and nine blocks while setter Hannah Fenker registered 39 assists, five digs and two blocks. Libero Trish Monroe had a team-high 12 digs.
GSU's Lacey Cormier and Sonora Armstrong finished the day with double-digit kills, with 13 and 10 respectively. Chelsey Lucas led the Tigers with 10 digs while setter Talon Morgan had 29 assists.
The Pirates outhit the Tigers .337-.059, as ECU tallied 46 kills to Grambling State's 33. East Carolina guarded the net well for the third match in a row, recording 14 blocks in the win, tying the team's season-high. For the tournament, the Pirates tallied 33 blocks.
In the first match of the day, Marshall swept Wisconsin Green-Bay to win the 2006 East Carolina Classic sponsored by Holiday Inn Express. Tournament MVP Kelly-Anne Billingy led the Herd with 19 kills while Stephanie Cahill tallied a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs. Libero Maggie Arias also had 10 digs. Setter Christin Bimberg had 42 assists on the day.
The Phoenix were led by Holly Visser, who had 10 kills and four blocks. Chelsea Lyga had a team-best nine digs. Setter Betty Slinger tallied 28 assists and five kills.
East Carolina concludes its five match homestand this Tuesday, Sept. 19 as it hosts North Carolina A&T. Match time at Minges Coliseum is set for 7 p.m.
