GREENVILLE, N.C. - Seven games against 2006 post-season participants and a trip to Cancun highlight the 2006-07 East Carolina University women's basketball schedule, released Tuesday by head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener.
The Lady Pirates begin their fifth season under the guidance of Baldwin-Tener on Sunday, Nov. 12 when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va., to take on 2006 NIT participant James Madison. ECU will participate in its first preseason tournament, taking part in the Vermont Tournament (Nov. 17-18) where they will face Harvard and either Holy Cross or Vermont. The Lady Pirates will make trips to Old Dominion (2006 NCAA Tournament qualifier) and Virginia Commonwealth late in November before opening the home portion of the schedule against Florida A&M on Nov. 26.
ECU will remain in Greenville during the opening weekend of December as the team will host the annual Lady Pirate Invitational, Dec. 2-3 at Williams Arena inside Minges Coliseum. East Carolina will play host to North Dakota State in the opening game, while Fairfield squares off against 2006 NCAA Tournament participant Florida State in the other matchup.
After hosting former CAA foe UNC Wilmington on Dec. 6., ECU will travel to Raleigh on Dec. 10 to face intra-state rival North Carolina State (2006 NCAA Tournament participant). The Lady Pirates will then head to Cancun, Mexico Dec. 19-20 to participate in the 2006 Caribbean Classic where they will play Pittsburgh, a 2006 NIT Final Four team, in the first game before facing Detroit-Mercy in the second contest.
"Our schedule this season is going to be a very challenging one for our young basketball team," Baldwin-Tener said. "With seven teams that went to post-season on our schedule, we will be tested early. This non-conference schedule not only renews some regional rivalries but the quality of opponents will help prepare us for the tough competition we will face in Conference USA."
East Carolina will face its final non-conference opponent when it returns to Minges Coliseum on Dec. 29 for a meeting against Long Island. The Lady Pirates open the Conference USA portion of the schedule on Jan. 2 as Marshall comes to Greenville. ECU will continue its four-game homestand, facing Southern Miss on Jan. 5 and UCF on Jan. 7. The Pirates return to the road for the remainder of January, with conference games at Houston (Jan. 10), UAB (Jan. 18), Memphis (Jan. 20) and Marshall (Jan. 28).
The month of February will see four C-USA home games for the Lady Pirates, beginning with UAB on Feb. 1. On Feb. 11 ECU will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma where it will square off against 2006 NCAA Tournament participant and C-USA Champion Tulsa. The Lady Pirates host UTEP (Feb. 15) and Tulane (Feb. 17) before closing out the regular season on the road, with games at Southern Miss (Feb. 22) and at UCF (Feb. 24).
The 2007 Conference USA Women's Basketball Championship Tournament will be March 1-4 at Reynolds Coliseum, on the campus of the University of Tulsa.
