
Volleyball Sweeps UNC Wilmington

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina swept intra-state rival UNC Wilmington Wednesday night at Minges Coliseum. Kelley Wernert led the Pirates with 13 kills while Mignon Dubenion recorded 10.
The Pirates won in convincing fashion, picking up their first shutout win of the season, 30-14, 30-25, 30-18. With the win, ECU improves to 4-3 on the season, 2-2 at home while UNC Wilmington drops to 5-4. Tonight's win marks the Pirates' 10th straight win over the Seahawks.
"We played really great in game one," head coach Chris Rushing said. "We seemed to lose focus in game two. I thought it was good to see that in game three we could come back with fire and intensity to close out the match."
Wernert, who has led the Pirates in kills on five occasions this season, also had seven digs to lead the team. Senior setter Heidi Krug recorded 37 assists and two block assists. She is now 56 assists away from becoming the all-time assist leader in ECU history. Freshman Stephanie Turner and sophomore Trish Monroe each added six digs.
Paula McConnell led the Seahawks offensively with 10 kills while Dorinda Petrisko led UNCW on the defensive end with five digs. Setter Jill Hoeck tallied 25 assists and a block assist.
The Pirates out-hit the Seahawks, .333 to -.053 on the night, as ECU tallied 42 kills to UNCW's 28. ECU committed only 13 attacking errors while the Seahawks had 33.
"Our team is loving the support of our loud student body," Rushing added.
The Pirates return to action this weekend as they travel to Charlotte, N.C. to participate in the Comfort Suites Invitational hosted by Charlotte. ECU will face North Florida Friday, Sept. 8 at 4:30 p.m. They will play host Charlotte Sat., Sept. 9 at 12:30 p.m. and will wrap-up the tournament against Penn at 5:00 p.m.
