GREENVILLE, N.C. - Morris Almond recorded his eighth career double-double scoring a team-best 18 points while grabbing 10 boards as Rice defeated East Carolina 64-47 Saturday night inside Minges Coliseum.
Almond, the nation's second leading scorer at 28.8 ppg., connected on 5-of-25 shots with five three pointers. Rice (8-7, 2-0) had two other players score in double figures in Lorenzo Williams (17) and Patrick Britton (10).
Senior Courtney Captain led all Pirate scorers with 18 for his eighth double-digit performance of the season. Captain scored the Pirates' first 10 points and was one of only two Pirates to make a field goal in the first half.
ECU freshman sensation John Fields pulled down career-high 13 boards.
Greg Killings' lay-up started a 10-0 spurt over a four-minute stretch snapping a 10-10 tie and giving the Owls a 10-point lead, 20-10, midway through the first half
With 3:16 remaining until intermission, Williams sank a pair of free throws to push the Rice lead to 16, 32-16.
To start the second half, Rice's Chris Hagan scored on a lay-up to extend the lead to 21, 39-18.
Captain drained a pair of three's and junior Darrell Jenkins added one of his own on the Pirates next three possessions to cut the Rice lead to 14, 41-27 with 15:49 remaining.
Rice would extend its lead to 25, 64-39, going on an 18-7 run to put the game completely out of reach.
The Pirates (5-10, 0-2) will be back on the court Wednesday, Jan. 17 when they play host to Tulane with a 7 p.m. tip scheduled.
