Postgame Quotes
East Carolina 78, Limestone 60
Nov. 10, 2007
East Carolina head coach Mack McCarthy
Overall thoughts on the game:
" We did foul, we made them turn the ball over, but we didn't transition as well as we could have. We also didn't keep them off of the offensive glass. Some of that was size and match up, and the fact that we were pressuring a lot. We used a lot of rotations, but we need to be sounder in that regard. Offensively, they did a really nice job getting into us. They kind of dictated a tempo of their own, which really pressured the basketball team. Eighteen turnovers are too many. Field goal percentage was ok, but we got a lot of easy shots. I think we executed offensively better than our stats indicate. I think that is something that will change over the course of time. We will make more shots than we were making today."
Match up against Richmond
"With the smaller teams it is more difficult to rebound against. We should have done a better job on the offensive glass. The defensive glass is a tough thing sometimes, because they have 6'2 and 6'3 guys running around. They are bigger guys, and it's harder to handle them. I am concerned about the height, but I don't think that is going to be a big weakness, even though we play three guards most of the time. I think we can be a pretty sound rebounding team."
On playing different combinations:
"We have to look at different combinations. I substituted [Darrell and Brock] back in the game a couple of times. I did it not because of talent, but because the group that was playing wasn't good enough from an experience standpoint. We have been putting in five at a time in scrimmages, and it worked pretty efficiently, but it wasn't as good as in a live game situation. When Brock was in with experienced players, he played really well, but when he was in there and had to direct traffic with a lot of young guys, he struggled a little bit. We need to be aware of that, and that is one of the things we wanted to learn from this game. We learned that there are some combinations that work, and some that don't work at this point in time."
Sophomore John Fields
"It was very important [to get this win]. It was a very long summer, a very long fall work out; we were just ready to come out here and show the world what we can do. I think ya'll are going to have a good team to come and see here at Minges Coliseum."
Senior Darrell Jenkins
"I think we did a good job of attacking them today. They had a good streach there, but I think our defense was okay. I think we need to play together more, but I am just happy with the win."
"I almost wish I was a sophomore. I am excited now just seeing the different mentality of our team. It's just a breath of fresh air."
"Now when we make a mistake we are not scared. Last year we made mistakes and we would look over at the bench and know we were coming out. If we make a mistake here he just wants us to make it at full speed. He just wants us to play hard and if you make a mistake that's alright, just do better next time."
