GREENVILLE, N.C. - After battling back from a 13-point second half deficit to tie the game with 18 seconds left, East Carolina's hopes of pulling off a come-from-victory over Liberty were shattered as sophomore Alex McLean's tip-in at the buzzer lifted the Flames to a 55-53 win over the homestanding Pirates here Saturday night.
B.J. Jenkins' 3-pointer midway through the second half gave Liberty (2-3) a 41-28 cushion. ECU (1-2) cut the lead to six twice over the next five minutes before Jenkins' lay-up pushed the lead back to double figures, 50-40, with 5:22 left.
The Pirates then began to make their attempt at a comeback. Sophomore Gabe Blair's three-point play got ECU within five, 52-47, with 2:05 left before senior Darrell Jenkins' 3-pointer got it down to one with 52 seconds remaining in regulation.
ECU freshman Brock Young then tied the game making the first of two free throws with 18 seconds left in the game.
Virginia transfer TeeJay Bannister then missed a lay-up, but McLean was there for the putback to give the Flames their second consecutive win over the Pirates.
B.J. Jenkins led all scorers with 22, while McLean chipped in 12 points and Bannister netted 10. Blair led the Pirates for a second straight game with 15 points. Jenkins added 12 points in the loss. Liberty converted 47.6 percent of its field goal attempts compared to 39.6 percent by ECU.
The Pirates suit up again Tuesday against Division III foe NC Wesleyan. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
