LOS ANGELES, Calif. - UCLA's Tyson Brummett tossed a complete game scattering six hits on the night while allowing just one earned run as the 15th ranked Bruins defeated East Carolina 6-1 Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Brummett (2-1) struck out a season-high nine batters while walking none and lowering his impressive ERA to 1.07 on the season.
T.J. Hose dropped his second outing of the season giving up five runs (three earned) in 5 1/3 innings of work. He allowed six hit, walked two and fanned four before giving way to senior lefty Jason Neitz. Neitz made his third appearance of the season in the bottom half of the sixth frame allowing one run with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Junior transfer Brett Butts worked the final frame striking out two batters.
UCLA (4-4) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Justin Uribe got the scoring going on a fielder's choice that plated Ryan Babineau, who got on with a one-out walk. After Nolan Rouse singled to left to score Uribe, he advanced to third on an infield single by Alden Carrithers, which set up Brandon Crawford's to-out single to right field.
In the top of the sixth inning, ECU (2-2) had a prime chance to score when senior catcher David Forbes laced a double down the left field line for his first hit as a Pirates. Harrison Eldridge executed a flawless sacrifice bunt moving Forbes to third with one out. However the Pirates were unable to capitalize as Brummett struck out Dale Mollenhauer and got Brandon Henderson to end the inning with a ground out to second.
The Bruins put up a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when pinch hitter Gabe Cohen took a Jason Neitz 0-1 pitch deep to left field pushing the lead to 6-0.
ECU got the bats working in the top of the seventh inning and plated their first run when freshman Broc Sutton singled home Ryan Tousley from second making the game 6-1.
After Tousley got the inning started on a bunt single to third, Jamie Ray moved him into scoring position with a single to right. Sophomore Ryan Wood's pinch-hit single to left loaded the bases for Forbes, but the Pirates were unable to add more runs as Brummett struck out the next two batters limiting the scoring to just one run in the frame.
The two teams will square off Saturday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. (EST). ECU's Dustin Sasser will move up in the rotation and get the nod on Saturday while lefty Brendan Lafferty gets the start for UCLA.
