GREENVILLE, N.C. - Blair Heffner's goal with 35 minutes to go gave the Pirates a 1-0 victory over Elon in ECU's first spring game of the season. Heffner was assisted by Sarah Kirkley, who led the Pirates in assists last season with ten. Jen Kurowicki got the start for the Pirates in net and played all 90 minutes earning the shutout.
"I am very happy with how our team competed today," head coach Rob Donnenwirth said. "The weather conditions were tough and there was standing water over most of the field. Even with the weather conditions, I felt we were able to possess the ball fairly well.
The spring is the time for us to develop players individually. We have been involved with strength, speed training and individual workouts since the beginning of January and started team training about two weeks ago. That is a lot of training without the reward of a game so it is exciting to see their progress in a game situation. Being able to measure your progress in a game situation validates the hard work the players put in and will motivate them to even train harder."
East Carolina will play in the South Carolina Tournament March 3. The Pirates will continue to play on the road in Norfolk, Va. on March 23 as they face Old Dominion. ECU will return home to Bunting Field March 31 to play Barton and Wingate.
