Pirates Fall To Green Wave, 2-1

NEW ORLEANS, LA. - Sean Morgan struck out 10 East Carolina (20-7, 3-1) batters as Tulane (21-7, 4-0) handed the No. 19 Pirates their first loss in 14 games with a 2-1 victory Friday night at Zephyr Field in Conference USA action.
Morgan improved to 6-1 on the year after working 6 2/3 innings. He allowed one run on four hits and walked six. Senior Daniel Latham picked up his seventh save of the year after shutting down the Pirates in the final 2 1/3 innings, where he gave up two hits and fanned two.
T.J. Hose dropped to 4-3 for the Pirates after allowing just two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Jason Neitz relieved Hose in the seventh frame lasting 1 1/3 innings with two punch outs and Brett Butts made his 16th appearance closing out the eighth inning.
The Pirates took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Jake Dean laced a double down the right field line scoring Drew Schieber, who drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a Morgan wild pitch and then crossed home on Dean's RBI double.
Jared Dyer put the Green Wave up 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth with a one-out single down the left field line that scored Warren McFadden to take the lead. McFadden knotted the game at one with an RBI single to left field off of Hose that plated Brad Emaus.
ECU had prime opportunities to put runs on the board all evening as they left 12 runners on base. In the fifth frame the Pirates had the bases loaded with no outs, but could not push across a run as Morgan struck out the side. Two frames later ECU left the bags juiced when Latham fanned Corey Kemp to end the inning.
Offensively for the Pirates Dale Mollenhauer continued his hot hitting as he was 2-for-5, while Dean went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Pirates and Green Wave will play game two of the three-game series Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. (EDT).
