All weekend long, I've been able to learn about the legacy of Coach LeClair, and how much he meant to the East Carolina program. As an outsider looking in, his memory lives on each day, and it's something the Pirates made sure would happen.
Donning No. 23 is the highest honor one can have for an East Carolina baseball player. Each year the coaching staff chooses one player that shows the same spirit and determination that Keith LeClair showed while both playing and coaching.
This season's ECU team happens to have three guys that have had that honor. Junior righthander Chris Powell is this year's recipient, while two members who once wore it are now on the staff. Volunteer assistant coach Ben Sanderson was the first to receive the jersey in 2003 after LeClair had to step down as head coach in 2002 after being diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gherig's disease).
The other member of the staff is director of baseball operations, Brian Cavanaugh, who donned No. 23 in 2005.
