GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina football team held their Third Annual Strongman Team Competition Thursday afternoon inside the Cliff Moore Practice Facility. Senior Jay Sonnhalter guided the Neptune Angers to the team title and captured the Blackbeard's Challenge crown for the second year in a row.
Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Mike Golden and his staff divided the 2007 Pirates into ten teams which consisted of ten players, with each player participating in at least one event. The team names this year were: Queen Anne's Revenge, Dark Adventure, Scourge of the Sea, Night Ranger, The Black Pearl, Diablo's Fortune, Kings Ransom, Oceans Cry, Captain's Jewel, and the winning team, Neptune's Anger.
"You just want to kind of make something fun," Golden said of the event. "They work so hard. You just don't want it to be monotonous. We've been beating 'em up real good, and doing a lot of things. Now, the next two weeks, we've built the sword and now we've got to sharpen it. (After this) they get a break, and then we've got (10) workouts and we're gonna rock and roll and get them ready to report (to preseason camp)."
The Neptune's Angers were captained by Sonnhalter along with CJ Wilson, Fred Hicks, Larry Lease, Matt Thompson, Eric Nowell, Partick Pinkney, Travis Williams and Ronald Wright.
This year's competition consisted of an overhead log press (max reps in 1 min.), 100-yard farmers walk (fastest time), 100-yard wooden sled push (fastest time), sandbag stack (fastest time), deadlift hold for (longest time), 300-pound sled pull (fastest time), carry and drag medley (fastest time), 2x400 relay (fastest time), and ending with Blackbeard's Challenge, a mix of all events (fastest time).
