GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina ushered in the 2008-09 basketball season on Friday with the Purple-Gold Fan Jam inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The event featured scrimmages by both the Pirate men and women's squads and was capped with a 29-17 win by the Pirate Men's Black squad in a 15-minute exhibition.
The ECU dance team, drum line and the ZOOperstars treated Pirate fans to performances. The men and women's teams also performed their own choreographed dance routine to the delight of those in attendance.
"It was really fun," said Pirate basketball coach Mack McCarthy. "We have so many things that we some time take for granite. I was really tickled with the evening."
"We're really trying to target our student population this year," said women's head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. "It really makes a difference to our players."
The ECU men's program capped the evening with a 15-minute rehearsal, culminating in that 29-17 win for the Pirate Black squad of Jamar Abrams, Daquan Joyner, James Legan, Greyson Sargent, Chad Wynn and Brock Young.
Abrams led the Black, who scored 15 of its 27 points behind the arc, with 12 points. Young added seven points while Legan knocked down a pair of 3s for six points.

Jontae Sherrod led the Purple squad with seven points, while freshman Chris Turner added six points.
Sophomore Shuanda Ashford topped all the ladies scoring with 16, but her Purple team fell to its Gold counterpart, 34-31, in a 20-minute scrimmage.
Both the men and women's teams open the season Nov. 14 at home. The women's squad will host Hampton beginning at 5:30 p.m., which will be followed by the Pirate men's season opener against Coker at 7:30 p.m.
