Postgame Quotes
East Carolina Head Coach Mack McCarthy
On The Game Overall"We made some progress between Friday night and tonight, mostly in just how we approached the game mentally. I was really pleased with how receptive they were and how team oriented they were on both ends of the floor. We've got a lot of things we have to do better, but we're clearly sharing the basketball and trying hard. We also have a lot more offensive weapons than we've had in the past."
On Darrius Morrow And Daquan Joyner
"They're both capable of playing well, but what they're not capable of right now is sustaining that play over a long period of time. Tonight was really big for both of them. They played well for extended minutes. They're both really skilled and talented guys, but they're both still learning how hard they have to play and how much effort that it takes mentally and physically to stay consistent."
On The Balanced Scoring
"Nine turnovers was a huge improvement over the 22 from Friday night. Twenty-six assists on 36 field goals was also really good. I think we're going to have balanced scoring more nights than not. We have some people who can drive the ball, some who can hit the mid-range shot and obviously we have some three-point shooters. We've got to find a way to get to the free throw line more consistently as we had 16 attempts in the second half but none in the first half.
"But it's a lot of fun when you can share the basketball. That's a happier locker room when you have six or seven guys in double-figures."
On James Legan
"James has to pick his spots. He doesn't have to force the action. Tonight he did one thing really well that he didn't do so well the other night. He had been settling for jump shots coming off screens on Friday night instead of really attacking and getting 10-foot jump shots. The 20-foot shot is fine if he's wide open, but he was settling for that the other night. He did a much better job of getting the ball inside and attacking for most of the game."
On The Improvement of Daquan Joyner
"Well it's night and day. You would only see a glimpse of him every now and then last year. He really had a great off-season. He had a good spring and a really good summer working in the weight room, doing the individual workouts and playing in pick-up games. Everybody was raving about how much better he was.
"He's not an extremely confident person even though he knows he's talented. He used to wait for it to happen, but now he's making it happen. He's capable of being an awfully good college basketball player. There are things he can do that other people aren't capable of. He can really run and jump and he's got good hands. He's got a great touch, too. He's got a real knack for playing basketball, he's just never played hard all the time."
Senior James Legan
On The Start To The Season
"We came out and executed our offense and I was just making shots tonight. It feels great to start 2-0. We have an opponent in Campbell coming up on Wednesday and now we're just ready for that."
Freshman Darrius Morrow
On His Offense Tonight
"It feels good to get my first double-digit game. Friday night was just an adjustment to my first college basketball game. I think some of the difference was that I was probably nervous on Friday night with my first game and I was not as nervous tonight. Coach got on me after Friday night's performance so I came here ready to work. It's all about my aggressiveness."
Senior Sam Hinnant
On His Defensive Leadership
"I've taken on that role being a leader on this team as a whole. Offensively we've got so many weapons that I don't have to score every night for us to win. Darrius Morrow has offensive capabilities and he had a great game tonight. Defensively I'm trying to be a vocal leader and keep everybody in the right spots and try to take on the leadership role."
On Darrius Morrow And Chad Wynn
"Darrius comes in and works hard every day. He and Chad Wynn go hard at each other every day to try and make each other better. Chad had a good game on Friday and Darius had the good game tonight. We're going to need both of them throughout the season."
