East Carolina Players Campbell Post-Game Quotes
East Carolina Head Coach Mack McCarthy
On The Game Overall
"We got a lot of contributions from a lot of different people, which is what we have to have. The negative of the night was that we didn't do the things we needed to do defensively. We let them drive it and get to the rim too much and have too many second shots. We have to clean that up before we become a better basketball team. Our effort is good, our intentions are good, but our execution is not where it needs to be."
On ECU's Offense And Defense
"Offensively we were aggressive. We threw the ball inside and drove it. We cut hard against a very hard-playing defensive team. They really play as hard as anybody we'll play all year.
"But they were also able to break us down and get to the free throw line and stay in the game, despite not shooting a great percentage. They were also able to get offensive rebounds because when we rotate to stop penetration that creates an opening behind us. We got one rotation but didn't get the second. That's typical of a young team and not totally unpredictable, based on what we saw at practice."
On Campbell
"They've got a lot of guys who are going to be good players. They're learning a lot about their team; played 12 guys double-figure minutes. They're searching for that combination, sort of like we are."
On Campbell's Jonathan Rodriguez
"We wanted to keep somebody fresh on him all the time. We also wanted to switch some things that he normally gets on one-on-one situations, so we inverted the floor some. We gave him a lot of different looks. Sometimes we switched and sometimes we didn't switch. All of that was by plan.
"One way to defend a good offensive player is to make him work really hard on the defensive end. Whoever he was guarding, we ran him off a bunch of screens, seeing if we could wear Rodriguez down a little bit."
On Sam Hinnant
"Since day one when he got here, he understood the game at a different level than most people. He doesn't come out of the lineup because he understand every defense that we're in, the positioning we're supposed to be in and what we need to do in the last two or three possessions of each half. That's why he's even effective at point guard sometimes. We used that lineup again tonight and I thought he did an outstanding job of directing the team.
"He is also diversifying his game. It's easy to get caught up in shooting the three if that's what they allow you to do. They're taking that away from him so now he's shot-faking and driving the ball. He's also got a mid-range game and he can get all the way to the rim. He's a very cerebral player.
Senior James Legan
On His Performance To Start The Year
"Confidence in my shot and my teammates having faith in me on the court has really helped me play well these last three games."
Senior Sam Hinnant
On His Offense Tonight
"I missed a couple of shots early, but my confidence didn't go down. I realized they were playing aggressive on defense and I knew I could drive on them throughout the game.
"I am also getting a lot of help when I don't score. Like I said last game, I don't need to score each night because we have so many weapons. We have the inside-out game that we haven't really had the last two or three years. I'm happy the post-players developed."
On The Chemistry Of The Team
"It is really good. I've been saying that since the first day. The chemistry is so much better. We're all about East Carolina right now. We're all a family right now."
Sophomore Chad Wynn
On His First-Half Play
"I wanted to come back strong tonight. Injuries happen and I got a little cut on my lip. I went out and came back in kind of cold after sitting on the bench for a while. The first half was a big half for me and I was happy to help out the team a lot."
