GREENVILLE, N.C. - Clutch free throw shooting by freshman Darrius Morrow and sophomore Brock Young helped East Carolina hold off VCU in overtime, 93-90, inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Tuesday night.
Morrow made 1-of-2 free throws to break a 90-all tie with 20 seconds remaining and Young made both shots at the charity stripe with 10 seconds left to give ECU (4-1) the three-point victory. The Rams had a chance to tie the score in the extra period, but Bradford Burgess missed a 3-pointer as time expired.
The Pirates produced a balanced scoring attack as five players reached double-figures, led by James Legan with 20 points. The senior shooting guard made 8-of-13 shots, including 4-of-8 of 3-point attempts along with six rebounds and four assists.
Morrow and Young each tallied a double-double in the contest. Young scored 17 points and dished out a career-high 11 assists. Morrow set career-highs in both points (16) and rebounds (12). All of his points came after halftime.
Senior Sam Hinnant collected 17 points and sophomore Daquan Joyner scored 12 to round out the double-digit point performances.
VCU (2-2) received a career-high 35 points from senior Eric Maynor. The reigning 2007-08 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year made 11-of-20 shots and 6-of-12 attempts from behind the arc. He added six rebounds and six assists, while scoring 27 points after halftime.
Sophomore Larry Sanders added a double-double with 16 points and 14 boards, while classmate Joey Rodriguez chipped in with 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.
In the first half, the Rams utilized a 15-4 scoring run, which included four 3-pointers, to take a 27-15 advantage at the 7:59 mark.
ECU closed the half on a 9-2 run to trim its deficit to four, 37-33, at intermission. It marked the first time this season the Pirates trailed entering the locker room.
Freshman Jontae Sherrod made a pull-up jumper and Joyner scored seven points during rally. Joyner was a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the field and made 4-of-5 foul shots to total a game-high 12 points at intermission.
At the 18:23 mark, the Pirates took their first lead of the game - 39-37 - since the score was 2-0 to open the contest, when Sam Hinnant buried a 3-pointer from the right wing.
VCU trailed 75-69 at the 3:25 mark when Maynor went on a scoring tear. The senior tallied the Rams next 11 points to make the score 82-80 in favor of the Pirates. After Young missed a pair of free throws with 48 seconds left, Sanders dunked a pass from Maynor to knot the score, 82-82. The Pirates had an opportunity at the end of regulation, but Hinnant missed a 3-pointer with three seconds left to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Pirates and Rams exchanged baskets before Hinnant converted a rare four-point play to give ECU the edge 88-84 with 3:21 left.
After VCU trimmed its deficit to three, Maynor drained his sixth 3-point shot of the night to tie the score with 1:43 remaining in the extra period.
With 48 seconds remaining, Young stole a pass to give the Pirates possession. Young missed a jumper, but Morrow snared the offensive rebound and was fouled on his follow attempt.
Morrow connected on 1-of-2 free throws to give the Pirates the one-point edge, 91-90.
Maynor drove to the basket in attempt to give his squad the lead, but Hinnant stepped in front of the game-high scorer and drew an offensive foul. Young sank two foul shots to secure the victory for the Pirates.
The Pirates ended the night shooting 50.7 percent (34-for-67) from the floor and 35 percent (7-for-20) from behind the arc. The Rams made 41.6 percent (32-for-77) of their shots and 13-of-33 attempts (39.4 percent) on 3-pointers.
ECU heads on the road for the first time this season to battle Winthrop on Saturday, November 29 at 7 p.m.
