Postgame Quotes
East Carolina Head Coach Mack McCarthy
On The Difference In The Game
"Once again we got going when we started playing defense well enough to limit them to one shot. The points off turnovers helped, but the big thing that helped in transition, when we blew the lead open, was when we held them to one shot.
"To start the second half, we were limiting them to one shot and they only made 6-of-32 in the second half. We were able to get the ball and have numbers a lot."
On Sharing The Ball
"I thought we made really good decisions, based on 23 assists and nine turnovers. That's a really good stat. I thought Brock Young made really good decisions, but I also thought everybody shared the basketball. I thought we really did a nice job of looking for each other and trying to find the guy with the best shot, rather than a guy with just a shot."
On The Negative Sides Of Tonight
"We still let them get second shots in the first half too much. We got beat in transition a few times. I thought it took us a little bit of time to get focused. Whether it was due to coming out of exams or having a week off, I don't know what the reason was.
"I thought Brock's energy really got us going. Once that happened, everybody chipped in."
On The Scoring Balance
"I think it starts with the fact that we have more weapons. Last year, if you took away Sam Hinnant or James Legan, there weren't a lot of consistent areas you could go to for points. Now if you don't guard Darrius Morrow or Chad Wynn, they will score. This is also Jamar Abrams' third straight double-figure game. We talk a lot about James and Sam, but Jontae Sherrod is starting to have those kind of numbers too. He also has a little bit more of a dimension where he can slash to the rim, get fouled or create something for somebody else."
UNC Greensboro Head Coach Mike Dement
On The Difference Between The Two Teams
"They're a confident team and that's totally opposite of us. We're not a very confident team in anything right now. We're not knocking down shots; we're missing layups and dunks. We were playing and fighting hard early and a little flurry of turnovers got them a seven-point lead.
"Early in the game you could tell they were coming out of exams, just like we were, but they really got going in the second half."
On ECU's Balance
"At halftime, I think everybody on the team had scored for them. We were struggling to find scorers. They do have good weapons across the board. To have that many guys in double-figures shows that we don't have much of a defensive effort when things don't go well for us on the offensive end. But that's our issue and something we're going to have to work on."
Senior Sam Hinnant
On The Second Half
"At the half, Coach McCarthy told us UNCG's stats, and all their points were off fast-breaks or second-chance points. Those two things, getting back on defense and rebounding, we can control. We just tried to focus more on rebounding and pushing the ball. We got a lot of open looks and knocked them down."
On This Year's Success
"We're just getting better each day and we're maturing really quickly. It is surprising because I've never been a part of a college team that has started 8-1. We have challenges ahead of us with three ACC teams up next."
Sophomore Brock Young
On Finding The Open Man
"It's a confidence thing. Playing with the guys in practice and from last year and this summer, they know my game and I know their game. I know when to find them now.
"It's fun seeing them knock down shots and being out there playing with these guys. It's a fun experience and we're just going to try to keep it going throughout the rest of the season."
