GREENVILLE, N.C.- East Carolina freshman Seth Maness and junior Justin Bristow have been named to the 2008 Roger Clemens Award Watch List which is given annually to the nations top collegiate pitcher (starter or reliever) the committee announced Tuesday.
Maness, a native of Pinehurst, N.C., leads the Pirate pitching staff with an 8-0 record, sports a 2.79 ERA in 71.0 innings and has fanned a team-best 67 batters while walking just 14. With his win against Presbyterian College on April 25, Maness became the first freshman in ECU's history to start a season at 7-0. He is one of two pitchers in Conference USA to register eight wins and ranks among the league leaders in batters struck out looking (second); batters struck out (third); ERA and innings pitched (fourth) and opposing batting average (fifth).
Bristow, a native of Richmond, Va., boasts a 7-2 record with a team-best 2.63 ERA in 75.1 innings and has struck out 63 and walked 20. He is one of three pitchers in C-USA to throw two complete games and is the only pitcher to toss a pair of complete game shutouts (Monmouth - Mar. 2 and Presbyterian - Apr. 26). In seven of his 11 starts he was struck out at least six batters and has worked into the seventh inning in eight starts.
"This is a tremendous honor for both Seth and Justin," said Head Coach Billy Godwin. "Both of these young men work hard and bring their "A" game every time they toe the rubber and it is truly exciting to watch them work every week."
The winner of the Roger Clemens Award is selected through three rounds of voting by all Division I head baseball coaches, a selection of national media who cover collegiate baseball, the 16 winners of the R. E. "Bob" Smith Award, which was presented to the top player in the country in Houston in 1988-2003, and the 10 previous finalists for the Clemens Award. Jered Weaver of Long Beach State (2004), Luke Hochevar of Tennessee (2005), Andrew Miller of North Carolina (2006), and David Price of Vanderbilt (2007) were previous winners of the Clemens Award.
The Roger Clemens Award was named after future Hall of Famer who began his march to stardom while leading the University of Texas to the College World Series title in 1983. As a professional, Clemens has won 350 games (eighth best in history), fanned more than 4,600 hitters and won seven Cy Young Awards, emblematic as the top pitcher in his league. The Roger Clemens Award is the only award of its kind, honoring the finest pitchers in college baseball.
