GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The East Carolina volleyball team opened its 2008 campaign by defeating East Tennessee State 3-0 on Friday night inside Minges Coliseum as part of the East Carolina Classic. With the victory, the Pirates move to 1-0 on the season while the Bucs fall to 0-1.
In set one, the Pirates stormed ahead 19-7 on their way to a 25-12 victory. Set two would not provide ECU with the margin of victory. The home team pulled out to a 10-5 lead before the Bucs staged a comeback and the teams traded points until East Carolina pulled out a hard-fought 25-22 win. Finally, in set three, the Pirates had control throughout and won 25-18.
Leading the way for the Pirates, in her collegiate debut, was freshman outside hitter Amanda Lutzow, who pounded down 13 kills in just 20 attempts, good for a whopping .600 hitting percentage. Redshirt sophomore Erica Banning also had an outstanding .750 hitting percentage as she had six kills in just eight attempts.
Junior setter Hannah Fenker was credited with 33 assists in the three game sweep and picked up two block assists on the night as well. Fenker’s classmate Stephanie Turner also turned in a nice all-around match as she collected six kills and nine digs. Senior defensive specialist Trish Monroe closely followed Turner with eight digs.
Tomorrow, the Pirates will continue play in the East Carolina Classic as they take on Howard at 1 p.m. and face High Point in the nightcap at 7 p.m.
In today’s earlier contest, High Point defeated Howard 3-0.
