FLORENCE, S.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team earned a fifth place finish at the season-opening Raines Development Intercollegiate on Tuesday. The Pirates carded a four-over 868 in the two-day, 54-hole tournament held at the par-72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina.
ECU was one of 14 of the 18 squads that finished their rain-delayed second round on Tuesday morning before playing the third and final round.
Georgia Southern coasted to a 13-stroke victory with a 22-under 842, paced by a balanced attack that saw three golfers finish in the Top 10. Georgia College and State University placed second with a 9-under (855) followed by William & Mary at even-par (864) and host Francis Marion at 3-over (867).
ECU freshman Harold Varner (73-71-71=215) tied for ninth place at 1-under to lead the Pirates. Sophomore Warren Straub (71-70-75=216) finished at even-par and tied for 12th. Senior Andre Thorsen (74-73-72=219) tied for 29th, while his classmate Markus Leandersson finished 44th. Freshman Adam Stephenson (72-77-75=224) tied for 59th in his first collegiate tournament.
William & Mary's Brent Paladino (70-66-66=202) earned medalist honors with a record-setting 54-hole total of 14-under. He fired second and third round totals of 6-under en route to breaking the old mark of 207 set by Ryan Gildersleeve of the University of South Alabama in 2002.
East Carolina will return to action Sept. 29-30 when the Pirates participate in the VCU Shootout, hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University, at the Hermitage Country Club in Richmond, Va.
