Stefon Jackson added 19 points and Julyan Stone had 13 for the Miners (11-6, 2-1 Conference USA). Stone had seven assists and Jackson added six. Culpepper and Jackson also tallied four steals apiece.
Brock Young led the Pirates (9-7, 1-2) with 18 points and seven assists, and was the only player in double-figure scoring for East Carolina.
UTEP jumped out to a 12-2 lead early in the first half but the Pirates kept pace with the Miners throughout the frame, pulling within 41-36 at the break.
The Miners lead reached as high as 17 points in the first half before the Pirates trimmed their deficit to three points, 39-36, on a Chad Wynn layup with 1:13 left in the first stanza.
Jackson, the Miners' all-time leading scorer, made a pair of free throws in the closing minute of the first half to give the Miners a five-point cushion heading into the locker room.
After a falling behind by 13 in the first four minutes of the second half, ECU responded with an 11-0 run, including eight straight points from Sam Hinnant, to pull the Pirates within two, 50-48.
UTEP answered back by outscoring ECU 16-0 over the next three minutes, using three 3-point plays, to put the game out of reach.
Stone and Jackson also hit two 3s apiece, as the Miners were 8-of-17 from long range. The Pirates were 5-of-19.
ECU returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Houston. The Conference USA matchup is scheduled for an 8 p.m. EST tip.
