
Pirates Officially Open Basketball Practice Saturday

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina University men's basketball team will officially begin practice for the 2009-10 season on Saturday, October 17 at 12 noon inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. Practice is open to the public and will culminate with an intrasquad scrimmage beginning at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Fans desiring to attend practice on Saturday are asked to enter through Gate 3 of the coliseum and sit in the upper level of the arena.
The Pirates will have four players who started at least 10 games returning from last year. They are juniors Jamar Abrams, Chad Wynn and Brock Young, and sophomore Darrius Morrow.
Young finished second in the nation in assists per game, while Morrow was an All-Conference USA Freshman Team performer.
Abrams led the Pirates in rebounding during league play and Wynn doubled his per game averages in scoring and rebounding from his rookie season.
The Pirates also regain the services of redshirt sophomore DaQuan Joyner, who missed the final 25 games of the 2008-09 season with a foot injury.
East Carolina also returns senior Greyson Sargent, junior Jontae Sherrod, sophomore Chris Turner and redshirt freshman Howard Hurt.
Head coach Mack McCarthy has added freshmen Wakefield Ellison, Corvonn Gaines, Darius Morales and Erin Straughn along with walk-on Evan Salzano.
East Carolina opens its 2009-10 season on November 13 against UVa-Wise.
