GREENVILLE, N.C. --- John Ashaolu has officially been named Director of Basketball Operations at East Carolina University head men's basketball coach Mack McCarthy announced on Tuesday. Ashaolu fills the position vacated by John Moseley, who was promoted to assistant coach earlier this year.
Ashaolu will work closely with the Pirate basketball staff, helping coordinate and carrying out day-to-day activities of the program.
"I'm excited and honored to be joining the ECU family," Ashaolu said. "Coach Mack and his staff have Pirate basketball headed in the right direction. The support for the program from the community is great and I want to help bring them what they deserve - a basketball program they can be proud of on and off the court."
Ashaolu previously served as the head coach and director of basketball operations for Basketball Stars of America AAU in Pittsburgh the past two seasons. He also worked in a similar capacity for Grassroots Canada AAU in Toronto for five seasons.
A native of Toronto, Ontario, Ashaolu played collegiately at the University of New Orleans for two seasons before transferring to Xavier (La.) University. He served as team captain as a junior and senior and helped his team capture a share of the 2003-04 Gulf Coast Conference regular season championship. He earned his bachelor's degree from Xavier in 2004 and then received his master's degree from Duquesne, where he worked as a graduate assistant, in 2008.
"We are pleased to announce the addition of John Ashaolu, a bright young basketball mind, to our staff," McCarthy said. "His playing and coaching experience bring a unique diversity to our staff and program. John has held a variety of positions with quality coaches from his AAU experience to his position with Ron Everhart at Duquesne. We look forward to his immediate contributions to our efforts in building ECU basketball."
East Carolina opens its 2009-10 season November 13 when it hosts UVa-Wise.
