HOUSTON, Texas - The East Carolina volleyball team officially closes out its 2009 road slate Saturday, taking on Houston in a Halloween night affair. First serve is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Athletics/Alumni Center. The Pirates hold an all-time record of 1-8 against the Cougars and have never beaten them in Houston.
Despite out-blocking Rice 7-5, the Pirates suffered a 3-0 setback (19-25, 17-25, 17-25) last night at Tudor Fieldhouse. Senior Melissa Zentner paced the Pirate offense with seven kills, while redshirt freshman middles Briana Fleener and Kelly Derby combined for 11 block assists. In the back row, redshirt sophomore Nicole Jones reached double digits with 10 digs.
East Carolina struggled with its offense, hitting just .046 while Rice enjoyed a solid .280 performance. The Owls also recorded more kills (48-22), digs (43-33) and aces (5-2).
Meanwhile, Houston defeated Marshall 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21) Friday night at the Athletics/Alumni Center behind a career night from freshman Jasmine Terry. The Pearland, Texas native recorded a career-high 19 kills, with three digs and four blocks. She capped the night with the match-winning block in the fourth set.
Freshman setter Tara Roenicke added a double-double with 45 assists and 12 digs, while sophomore Ingrida Zauere turned in a 12 kill, 12 dig, double-double performance. Junior Amanda Carson and senior Alik Cardoso de Sa also had 23 and 13 digs, respectively.
After tonight's match, the Pirates return home to Minges Coliseum for a three-match homestand that will close out the regular season.
