East Carolina Head Coach Mack McCarthy
On Tonight's Game
"We did a lot of things we wanted to do tonight. We got to look at some combinations. We played a very `vanilla' game in that we didn't let them do a lot of the things we will do throughout the course of the season."
"We played only man-to-man and didn't show anything else. We didn't run any set plays and I think we're a set play kind of team."
On His Team's Turnovers
"The big thing that I was upset with tonight was that we held UVa.-Wise to a low shooting percentage and outrebounded them pretty well, but we should have gotten to the free-throw line more and taken better care of the basketball. We only had 13 fast-break points, despite holding them to a very low shooting percentage. We should have had 20-30 fast break points, which would have been the margin we were looking for. We turned the ball over 19 times, 11 times in the first half."
"That has been a consistent problem. Some of it is that we do sometimes have a bigger line-up on the floor. Some of it is just getting comfortable playing with each other. I think that's something we can improve on moving forward."
On UVa-Wise's Strong Start
"We gave up 15 points on five three-pointers in the first 2:30, but then only 45 points for the rest of the game. That part wasn't terrible. Some of the things that broke down for us defensively [later in the game] were second shots by the shooter. When they take a number of three-pointers, there are going to be long rebounds. Everybody has to be involved on those."
On Finishing Strong
"It was nice to finish the game on a good run. I thought we stumbled on some nice combinations, too. We probably could have had a better combination to defend them on the floor at the beginning of the game. But, we chose to go with the lineup that is going to be playing together a lot."
"They found out the level of intensity they have to play with all the time. We can't relax at all. We have very little margin for error. I think they got the message."
On Chad Wynn's Performance "He had a double-double and I'm really happy for him, but he's capable of more. He had four turnovers in close proximity to the goal. He only went 8-15 and he was shooting all two and three-foot shots. He's capable of better but he's taking steps in the right direction."
Junior Brock Young
On The Team's Late Surge
"Everybody came together and stepped it up on defense. That's what we preached all preseason, defense and rebounding. Everybody just stepped up, guarded their men and defended well."
On Playing Wake Forest Sunday
"Everybody has to be on the same page. We have to know our assignments. Wake Forest is a great rebounding team. We have to be able to box them out and rebound."
"We have to play hard the whole 40 minutes because they are a real good team. We stuck with them in the first half last year and ran with them. I think we kind of ran out of gas in the second half. Coach Mack preached a lot about being conditioned this year."
On This Year's Offense
"We are going to be more of an inside-out team this year. We can have Chad and Darrius Morrow in the game at the same time. That's a good combination because Darrius can shoot the 15-footer and Chad can finish when he's under the basket. They can go high-low. We have a good inside presence now."
Junior Chad Wynn
On His First Career Double-Double
"I've been working hard over the summer and in the preseason. Rebounding was one thing I worked on a lot. My offensive skills are a lot better. I've been working for that double-double since I got here. I'm pretty glad I got it."
On UVa-Wise's Strong Start
"I think it was more stuff that we didn't do right. We didn't know our man. Those are little things we can take care of. We have to know our defensive assignments as well as our offensive."
