GREENVILLE, N.C. - Marshall placed four players in double figures to defeat East Carolina, 76-62, in a Conference USA game on Wednesday evening inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
ECU (13-14, 5-9 C-USA) produced three players with double-digit point performances, led by Chad Wynn with 16 points. The sophomore center made 6-of-8 shots from the floor and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Darrius Morrow added 15 points and nine rebounds, while James Legan chipped in with 10 points in the loss.
Markel Humphrey poured in a game-high 24 points to lead Marshall (13-15, 5-8 C-USA). He connected on 8-of-14 shots and made all six foul shots he attempted.
The Thundering Herd's Chris Lutz added 15, and Tirrell Baines and Shaquille Johnson scored round out the top scorers in the victory.
The Herd opened the contest on a commanding 12-0 run into the first media timeout at the 15:27 mark.
After a Sam Hinnant 3-pointer with 10:50 left, Marshall scored two straight baskets to extend the lead to its largest of the half, 23-10, with 8:49 remaining. ECU answered back with an 11-3 spurt to get within five points, 26-21, at 3:54.
Marshall closed out the first half on an 8-2 run, including two 3-pointers, to lead 39-28 at intermission.
Wynn made a pair of free throws to pull the Pirates within eight points, 40-32, at the 18:03 mark. Marshall pushed its lead back to double figures as Humphrey scored four straight points. Humphrey later converted a 3-point play to give the Herd a 16-point advantage, 51-35, with 14:05 remaining.
An 8-0 spurt by the Herd pushed the lead to 19 points, 68-49, with 5:32 remaining and put the game out of reach.
ECU returns to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 28, when visits Minges Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be the final home contest of the season and final home game for ECU's two seniors, James Legan and Sam Hinnant.
