GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina dropped its final home game of the regular season against UAB, 82-62, inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Saturday.
The Pirates (13-15, 5-9 Conference USA) and the Blazers were knotted at 34-all at intermission. After halftime, UAB used a 22-3 run, including a spurt of 14 unanswered points, to improve its record to 20-9 overall and 10-4 in conference play.
Jamar Abrams led the Pirates offensively, tallying his first career double-double. The sophomore forward totaled a team-high 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Sam Hinnant and Brock Young each chipped in with 10 points in the loss. Hinnant made a pair of 3-pointers, while Young dished out seven assists.
Four players from UAB scored in double figures, led by Robert Vaden and Cameron Moore, who each tallied 18 points. Vaden made a trio of 3-pointers while grabbing six rebounds and handing out six assists. Moore made 8-of-9 shots from the floor and corralled eight rebounds off the bench for the Blazers.
Channing Toney tallied 17 points and Howard Crawford added 13 points in the victory.
The Pirates burst out to an early 11-4 advantage entering the first media time out at 15:15 behind three 3-pointers, two from Hinnant.
The Blazers erased the seven-point deficit to knot the score at 13-all on a Moore jumper with 11:20 remaining in the first half.
UAB trailed 18-17 and scored six straight points to take a seven-point lead - 24-17 - at the 6:53 mark. ECU answered back when Abrams sank a pair of free throws and buried a 3-pointer, followed by an off-balance 3-point play layup by Jontae Sherrod to help the Pirates retake the lead, 25-24.
Both squads traded baskets the rest of the first stanza, highlighted by a 3-pointer and jumper by Sherrod in the final minute to have the score tied at half, 34-all.
Chad Wynn opened the second half with a jumper for ECU to give it a 36-34 lead. After Young scored at the 14:41 mark to tie the score at 42-all, UAB used a 22-3 run to take a 19-point lead, 64-45, with 7:43 left in the contest.
ECU concludes the regular season on Saturday, March 7 at UCF.
