GREENVILLE, N.C. - With the program's first full intra-squad scrimmage only 10 days away, East Carolina raised the intensity level during its fifth workout of the spring practice period Wednesday. The two-hour session, conducted on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex, also served as the Pirates' third in full pads.
"Today was better than Monday," head coach Skip Holtz said. "I think some soreness is starting to set in now, not having done anything in pads all winter, but I think Coach [Mike] Golden has done a great job with the guys on the off days in the weight room. I think the attitudes out here have been good"
After the completion of individual work, ECU dedicated separate 15-minute periods to its rushing and passing game with a nine-on-seven inside segment and seven-on-seven pass skeleton drills. As has been the case in the two previous full-gear practices, the Pirates followed by devoting 30 minutes to 11-on-11 team work that featured various formations and all levels of coach Skip Holtz' current personnel. East Carolina wrapped up the workout with an enthusiastic version of its popular three-on-three drill again, matching tight ends, offensive and defensive lines, wide receivers and defensive backs, running backs and linebackers.
"A lot of guys are continuing to get some good work in out here, especially at the linebacker, tailback and wide receiver positions," Holtz added. "We are breaking the time down into 30-minute segments, enabling us to focus on the fundamentals and individual development, as well as the team. The goal is to improve each piece of the puzzle every day, even though we aren't about to put it all together at this point."
The Pirates will return to the practice facility Friday beginning at 4:00 p.m. to close out their second week of spring action.
NOTES: East Carolina will conduct its annual Senior Pro Timing Day on Thursday ... A total of 20 players (18 who wrapped up their eligibility after the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in January and two previous lettermen) will undergo testing in the Murphy Center and on Hight Field in front of an expected group of 15+ scouts representing National Football League and other professional franchises.
