GREENSBORO/CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Members of the East Carolina track and field program continued to prep for the Penn Relays by participating in the Murray Neely Invitational at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro and the Joe Hilton UNC Invitational in Chapel Hill. In all, the Pirates turned in 30 top 15 finishes while also taking the event title in the 4x100 relay in Greensboro.
The sprinters highlighted ECU's participation at the Murray Neely Invitational, as Kevin Thompson and Adian Sanderson took third and fourth, respectively, in the 200-meter dash with times of 21.33 and 21.60. Then, the 4x100 relay squad notched first-place, clocking in at 40.87 and just missing the NCAA regional qualifying mark of 40.66.
In Chapel Hill, Ericka Charles finished 12th out of 26 runners in the 400-meter dash, turning in a time of 58.65. Samantha Lichtner also earned a 12th-place result in the 1500-meter run, garnering a season-best time of 4:45.09. In the 100-meter hurdles, Jaslyn Grullon recorded her season-best, checking in at 15.05. In the field events, Valeria Moore earned 12th-place in the high jump with an attempt of 1.60m before Danielle Eiler and Amy Mueller notched fifth and 10th-place in the shot put with heaves of 13.19m and 11.71m. Eiler returned a few minutes later, recording a 46.83 in the discus while Kim Kanala also turned in a mark of 43.92 in the event for seventh-place. The Pirates dominated the top 10 of the hammer throw, as Charlene Grady (second, 50.72m), Maegan Lewis (third, 49.31m), Donisha Brown (fourth, 47.51m), Kanala (eighth, 45.51m) and Ashleigh Lee (ninth, 44.97m) all finished in the top 10. East Carolina also found such success in the javelin as Taylor Harris and Nicole Tozzi sat third (38.40m) and fourth (37.07), respectively.
For the men, Tony Bunn notched his second-best time of the season in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 50.57 and taking 10th-place. Then, in the 800-meter run, Matthew Dennish and Jarrett Newby grabbed fourth and sixth-place with times of 1:50.79 and 1:52.54. In the field events, Addison Johnson matched his personal-best in the pole vault, recording an attempt of 4.15m before Bayani Jones set his personal-best in the long jump with a mark of 6.89m, good for second-place. Then, Daniel Varela notched a fifth-place result in the hammer throw (49.44m) before Sam Barnhardt smashed his previous personal-high mark in the javelin, as he took second-place with a heave of 53.34m.
The Pirates return to competition April 23-25 when they participate in the 115th running of the Penn Relays at historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
