GREENVILLE, N.C. - For the second-straight day, East Carolina conducted its workout under the lights on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex Thursday. The Pirates, who returned to a single practice schedule a day after completing their initial two-a-day session Wednesday, also enjoyed a reprieve from the heat as temperatures stayed in lower 80's.
Skip Holtz and his staff devoted time guiding the Pirates through 50 minutes of team work, which was capped by a 10-minute goal line session that pitted the No. 2 and No. 3 units against one another. During its team session, all three levels of the preseason depth chart spent periods on all phases of the running and passing game, third down possessions and focusing on redzone efficiency with first-and-10 situations inside the 20-yard line both from an offensive and defensive standpoint.
"We had another great practice today," Holtz said. "The weather has been nice for our last two sessions and that has given us a chance to get a lot of team work in. Today we gave our No. 2's and No. 3's a bulk of the work to help prepare them for the scrimmage on Saturday, which will help us establish our first depth chart."
East Carolina will return to Hight Field and the Cliff Moore Practice Complex for another single workout Friday afternoon to finish preparations for Saturday's intra-squad contest at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. The scrimmage, closed to the public, will precede the team's first off day of preseason camp scheduled for Sunday.
NOTES: Six members of the 105-man roster missed a part or the entire workout Wednesday because of injuries or rehabilitation work - TE Justin Jones (concussion), RB Dominique Lindsay (concussion), OL Travis Melvin (concussion), DL Josh Smith (ankle), LB Matt Thompson (knee) and LB Kyle Tudor (ankle) ... RB Giavanni Ruffin, a junior college transfer who signed with the Pirates last February, reported to camp after being cleared by the NCAA Clearing House ... He was limited in Thursday's action due to NCAA practice regulations and will also sit out Saturday's scrimmage ... Friday's Practice Time: 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.; Season Opener: Sept. 5 vs. Appalachian State in Greenville (12 noon).
