GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina finalized preparations for its first intra-squad scrimmage of preseason camp with a two-hour practice in shorts and helmets Friday afternoon on Hight Field at the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
The contest, which will be held at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Saturday afternoon, will serve primarily as a personnel scrimmage designed to produce the program's first depth chart of the season. As a precautionary measure to ensure freshness for the game, head coach Skip Holtz kept the Pirates out of pads to minimize contact during Friday's session, which mostly stressed individual drills and skeleton work.
"I feel real good about the week of practice leading up to tomorrow's scrimmage," said Holtz. "We've had a physical week and certainly have had our share of colliding and banging, so we have a lot of guys who are sore. Plus, going in shorts also allowed us to use this practice as an opportunity to polish things up for the scrimmage."
The scrimmage, which is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m., will be closed to the public and will precede the team's first off day of preseason camp scheduled for Sunday.
NOTES: At the conclusion of Friday's workout, all players participated in a media training session conducted by Trone, Inc., which provided a hands-on lesson to help the Pirates gain an understanding of success in the public eye and promote a positive image ... In addition to ECU, media expert Scott Pryzwansky also works with North Carolina (football, men's and women's basketball), Duke (football, women's basketball), Georgia Tech (football), Auburn (basketball), Hendrick Motor Sports and Rusty Wallace, Inc. to name a few of his regional clients ... Seven members of the 105-man roster missed a part or the entire workout Thursday because of injuries or rehabilitation work - TE Justin Jones (concussion), RB Dominique Lindsay (concussion), OL Travis Melvin (concussion), TE Korey Reynolds (concussion), DL Josh Smith (ankle), LB Matt Thompson (knee) and LB Kyle Tudor (ankle) ... Sunday's non-practice day is the first since camp opened on August 7 and will be used to conduct meetings and lifting sessions ... Saturday's Scrimmage Time: 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.; Season Opener: Sept. 5 vs. Appalachian State in Greenville (12 noon).
