GREENVILLE, N.C. - Following a short, but physical scrimmage Saturday, East Carolina Head Coach Skip Holtz guided the Pirates through a productive light two-and-a-half-hour practice in shorts and helmets Sunday afternoon inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
Similar to Friday's workout, the Pirates opened Sunday's session with 20 minutes of special teams work emphasizing all aspects of the kicking game. After individual group segments, ECU once again keyed on special teams play before closing out with a 20-minute phase of seven-on-seven skeleton drills.
"It went well today," Holtz said. "We had a great lift out of everybody before we started, got in a two-and-a-half-hour practice in shorts and finished it off with some good conditioning afterwards. I was happy we were able to get quality teaching time in as well, especially with our kicking game.
"We accomplished what we needed to today," he added. "We'll make up some of the scrimmage time we lost with some live work against each other Monday and perhaps more later in the week. There are a lot of bright spots, but we have some concerns as well as is expected at this point in the preseason. Camp is a process to get ready for, not only Appalachian State, but the entire season. We'll continue to define roles and dig deeper into our preparation efforts for the opener as the week progresses."
NOTES: Senior RB J.R. Rogers (knee), junior DL Josh Smith (ankle) and red-shirt freshman DB Bill Wallace (ankle) did not participate in Sunday's practice session ... Monday's Practice Time: 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.; Season Opener: Sept. 5 vs. Appalachian State in Greenville (12 noon).
