GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina volleyball team plays the middle contest of a three-game home stretch Sunday, welcoming Conference USA foe Southern Miss to Minges Coliseum for a 2 p.m. first serve.
The Pirates kicked off their home schedule in style on Friday, riding a two sets to none lead to a 3-1 victory over UCF, which improved ECU to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Junior Lizzy Bruin picked up her first double-double of the 2009 campaign, pounding down a team-best 15 kills while notching a career-high 13 digs. Senior setter Hannah Fenker also tallied a double-double, her second-straight and third of the season, distributing 45 assists to go along with 12 digs. The Pirates also showed well at the net, out-blocking the Knights 14.0-7.0
East Carolina boasts four players with 100-plus kills in Stephanie Turner (140), Britney Roper (112), Melissa Zentner (108) and Bruin (106). Kelly Derby continues to pace the Pirates at the net, owning 34 total blocks. Additionally, Nicole Jones tops ECU with 89 digs with Turner close behind at 88.
The Golden Eagles enter Sunday's match at 13-3 overall and 1-1 in C-USA after falling in a four-set decision at Marshall on Friday. Ashley Mell recorded a double-double for Southern Miss, killing 11 balls while notching 19 digs. Kelsea Seymour and Maia Ivanova also picked up double-digit digs with 15 and 12, respectively. Mell paces the Golden Eagle offense with 168 kills in 2009 while Ivanova leads the squad defensively, owning 305 digs in 16 matches.
