Mack McCarthy Post-Game Press Conference
Brock Young and Daquan Joyner Post-Game Comments
East Carolina Coach Mack McCarthy
On His Team's Performance Tonight
"I think tonight was a culmination of a lot of things. We've had, obviously, a lot of distractions and a couple of tough losses.
"We were not very disciplined tonight in any phase of the game. We didn't execute offensively, which led to problems on the defensive end. We took bad shots because of poor decision making and because of poor execution offensively.
"I don't know if the losing and other distractions took a toll, but that's my best guess. Everybody was frustrated and we didn't handle our poor performance very well."
On His Team's Foul Trouble
"We had some fouls that were not very good on us. We didn't make very good decisions defensively. A whole lot of it comes back to a lack of discipline that haunted us in a lot of areas."
On His Team's Low Shooting Percentage
"I think it was three things. First, I have no answer for the 10-12 missed layups. The second thing is that they're really quick. That bothers you because you try to do everything a little quicker. That could have been a reason for the missed layups. The final thing is that we took some bad shots. We took bad shots because people tried to do too much on their own and we also didn't execute so we couldn't get anybody open.
"There was a level of frustration that carried over to the defensive end. Sooner or later, your defense is going to break down."
On The Improvement Of The Freshmen
"They're getting more comfortable all the time. They're doing things now we thought they would have done earlier. Erin Straughn had 11 rebounds and 12 points. Corvonn Gaines also gave us some good minutes with three assists. He really works hard defensively.
"They're all getting better. Part of that is just because of the playing time they've received the past few games."
Houston Coach Tom Penders
On Tonight's Win
"Anytime you win on the road, it's a big win. It was a conference win and we have a lot of respect for ECU.
"I'm very thankful that we were able to play as well as we did. We did a good job defensively on the guys we were really focused on. We really tried to focus on Brock Young and Chad Wynn and I thought we did a pretty good job.
"I haven't met a win I didn't like. This was not what I expected in terms of margin of victory. We might have had a little bit too much speed and depth for ECU tonight."
East Carolina Junior Brock Young
On Breaking The All-Time Assists Record
"It's a relief. I'm glad that I did it at home. It's too bad it was playing that type of game, but that's the way it turned out.
"There was a feeling of happiness and joy when I broke the record. I didn't know I had the record this early. I am going to keep making assists and doing what I do."
On The Team's Poor Shooting
"It was one of those nights when everybody was off. Sometimes you have those nights. All you can do is keep shooting.
"Shots didn't fall, but when they don't, we can't let that be a key to the game. We have to still play defense. We kind of fell apart there toward the end. We just have to learn to stay together when things aren't going our way."
East Carolina Redshirt Sophomore Daquan Joyner
On Houston Regaining Control Of The Game In The Second Half
"It was just that we didn't rebound. Every time we didn't rebound, it led to a fast break. They just hit shots. They're a pretty good team and executed on our mistakes."
On His First Career Double-Double
"It was my first career double-double, so I'm pretty excited. It's kind of hard to say I got a double-double and we still lost. I would like to have a win. But overall, I'm satisfied with how I played."
