
Pirates Swept In New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. - East Carolina lost for the ninth time in as many matches Friday, as Tulane captured a 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-18) win at Fogelman Arena. The Pirates fall to 1-20 overall and 0-9 in league play while the Green Wave is now 6-16 and 3-7.
Junior Jackie Varnum recorded eight kills to lead the offense while classmate Nicole Jones picked up a team-best seven digs. Kasey Kavanaugh complemented the defense with two blocks. Additionally, Varnum posted a career-high three service aces.
Tulane tallied 48 kills on 82 attempts with a miniscule 10 errors to register a .463 hitting mark while ECU racked up 31 kills on 85 swings with 12 errors for a season-high percentage (.224). The Green Wave also held a slight 6-5 advantage in service aces.
Errors plagued ECU during the first set, as Tulane raced out to an 11-3 lead. The Pirates never recovered and the Green Wave cruised to the 11-point margin of victory.
The Pirates came out in the second frame and established a 3-1 advantage. The lead would then flip-flip between the squads until a Tulane attack error gave East Carolina its last lead at 19-18. A 6-3 run, capped off by a Milena Dragovic kill, allowed the Green Wave to clinch the set.
Tulane scored nine of the first 12 points in the third interval to take a commanding 12-3 advatnage. A solo block by Whitney Campbell capped off a 5-0 run for the Pirates, making the score 12-8. However, ECU could get no closer than four the remainder of the match.
East Carolina returns to action Sunday when it takes on Southern Miss. First serve at Reed Green Coliseum is set for 2 p.m. ET.
