
Volleyball Caps Weekend At Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The East Carolina volleyball team plays its first of two matches against Southern Miss Sunday, taking on the Golden Eagles at Reed Green Coliseum.
The Pirates lost for the ninth time in as many matches Friday, as Tulane captured a 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-18) win at Fogelman Arena.
Junior Jackie Varnum recorded eight kills to lead the offense while classmate Nicole Jones picked up a team-best seven digs. Kasey Kavanaugh complemented the defense with two blocks. Additionally, Varnum posted a career-high three service aces.
The Green Wave tallied 48 kills on 82 attempts with a miniscule 10 errors to register a .463 hitting mark while ECU racked up 31 kills on 85 swings with 12 errors for a season-high percentage (.224). Tulane also held a slight 6-5 advantage in service aces.
Meanwhile, Southern Miss rallied from a two-set deficit Friday to hand Marshall a 3-2 defeat in Hattiesburg.
Redshirt junior Ashley Mell led the Golden Eagles (12-9, 5-5) with 21 kills, while sophomore Halie Ecker and junior Lauren Sears contributed 17 and 15 kills respectively.
The Golden Eagles had four players with double-digit digs led by Ecker who posted a career-high 23. Lisa Knecht recorded 17 digs, Elizabeth Rinaudo had 13 and junior setter Kelsea Seymour had 10. Junior Sarah Jane Bowden had a team-best seven total blocks. Seymour dished out 58 assists in the match.
Southern Miss finished the match with 70 kills on .244 hitting, while the Herd (9-12, 3-6) had 65 kills with a .222 attack percentage. Southern Miss posted 67 assists, 76 digs and 10.0 total team blocks. Marshall finished the night with 61 assists, 63 digs and 11.0 team blocks.
