ORLANDO, Fla. - Junior Dominique Davis threw for 310 yards and three touchdowns Saturday, but East Carolina fell short against UCF, dropping a 49-35 decision at Bright House Networks Stadium.
Senior Dwayne Harris caught nine passes for a career-high 146 yards as well as tallying a season-best 289 all-purpose yards. He also extended his streak of contests with a reception to 39 - the second-longest active stretch in FBS. Meanwhile, Davis converted 39 of his 54 passes, setting a single-game program record for completions and a career high for attempts.
Defensively, junior Bradley Jacobs established a personal best with a team-high nine tackles while sophomore Michael Brooks posted a career-standard eight.
ECU racked up 421 yards of total offense, but gave up 424 - including 265 on the ground. East Carolina also lost for the first time in eight contests when recording at least 300 yards through the air.
The Knights grabbed a quick 14-0 advantage as freshman Jeff Godfrey tossed eight and 40-yard touchdown passes to A.J. Guyton and Jamar Aiken. A 49-yard rush by Harris on a third down play set up the Pirates at the UCF three-yard line before ECU found the endzone as Davis connected with Andrew Bodenheimer on second and goal.
A methodical 15-play, 81-yard drive, capped off by a one-yard plunge by Ronnie Weaver, re-established the two-possession edge for the Knights as 7:10 showed on the second-quarter clock. Davis responded with a 10-yard touchdown rush to the left side to pull East Carolina to within seven again, but UCF made it four scores on four first-half possessions when Latavius Murray cashed in with a one-yard rush.
Davis attempted to cut into the deficit before halftime, but he threw an interception at the Knight 15-yard line to allow UCF to keep a 14-point lead heading into the break.
A two-yard scoring play from Davis to Harris on the Pirates' first drive of the second half made the score 28-21 before Nick Cattoi missed a 37-yard field goal to leave the margin at seven. However, Davis was sacked on a second-down play at the ECU 43 to force a Ben Ryan punt. Murray closed out the third-quarter scoring with a two-yard TD rush with exactly four minutes remaining as the score stood at 35-21.
After the teams traded scores over an eight-minute span in the final period, the Pirates attempted an onside kick that was recovered by the Knights at the ECU 38-yard line. UCF was able to cash in with a Murray 10-yard scoring scamper, but the Pirates succeeded on their second onside kick try with 5:42 left. East Carolina ran 13 plays, but failed to convert on fourth down at the home team's 15, giving the Knights the ball back to run out the clock.
