CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Coming off a pair of victories inside the comfortable surroundings of Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum, East Carolina will face its first test of the season Thursday evening as it takes on North Carolina State in the first round of the Charleston Classic.
Thursday's game will be regionally televised on MASN and aired across the Pirate Sports Radio Network. Live audio is also available at www.ecupirates.com.
The Pirates (2-0) made 11-of-23 3-point attempts en route to a 76-63 win over Campbell on Monday. Jontae Sherrod connected on 4-of-7 shots from behind the arc, finishing with 21 points.
With senior Brock Young forced to sit out for the first time in his career due to injury, sophomore Corvonn Gaines had a career-night with 11 points, five assists and six steals while playing all 40 minutes. Fellow sophomore Erin Straughn also added 12 points and is the only Pirate to score double figures in both games.
Young, who scored 25 points against the last time the ECU played N.C. State, is expected to return to court Thursday, as is senior Chad Wynn. Wynn missed the Campbell game with a foot injury.
This will be the sixth meeting this decade between the two instate rivals after a 20-year hiatus. The Pirates and Wolfpack met 14 times from 1968-82. N.C. leads the all-time series 18-1, but all 18 victories have come in Raleigh. Thursday's game will be the first meeting between the two at a neutral site. The Pirates recorded their only win in the series, which resumed in 2002, three years ago at home.
The Pirates have yet to yield more than 63 points in a game and have held their first two opponents to an average shooting percentage of 40.2. Their perimeter defense has been superb allowing foes to shoot just 22.6 percent.
The senior duo of Jontae Sherrod (15.0 ppg) and Jamar Abrams (12.5 ppg) leads the team in scoring and has made 11 of its 19 3-point field goals.
N.C. State (1-0) put five players in double figures against Tennessee Tech in their season-opening win led by freshman C.J. Leslie who finished with 21 points. The Wolfpack made 31-o-f-41 free throw attempts en route to an 82-69 win. Leslie also blocked six shots.
The winner advances to the semifinal round and will face the Charlotte-George Mason winner Friday at 6 p.m. The losers of the two games will square off Friday at 8:30 p.m. in the consolation round.
