GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina held control of all three sets Sunday, but Tulane rallied in each frame to post a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-20) win at Minges Coliseum.
Jackie Varnum led the Pirate offense for the second-straight match, putting down nine kills while Whitney Campbell had eight. Defensively, Nicole Jones tallied her third-straight double-digit dig effort and 14th of the season, racking up 13. Additionally, Varnum and Kasey Kavanaugh both racked up three blocks.
ECU (1-29, 0-18) raced out to a 5-2 lead in the first set and stayed ahead by as many as four at 13-9. However, Nikki Osuna tallied an ace which tied the score at 14 and capped a 5-1 Green Wave run. The Pirates led once more, 16-15, but Tulane (12-19, 9-10) went on a 10-2 tear to close out the set and go up 1-0.
Two kills by Varnum at the beginning of the second interval gave East Carolina a 4-1 advantage and prompted the Green Wave to call timeout. A Tulane attack error kept the Pirates in front by three (11-8), but a 6-0 run from the visitors swung the momentum back to the other side. The teams traded scoring runs over the next several points, leaving the score at 18-17 in favor of the Green Wave. However, Tulane closed out ECU again with a late run, this time to the tune of 7-3.
The Pirates held an early lead for the third-straight frame, scoring five of the first six points. They were able to hold off the Green Wave for a while, but the visitors took the lead for good on a block, making the score 15-14. Tulane would double up ECU from there, ending the match with a block.
East Carolina plays its final home game Wednesday, taking on Marshall at 4:00 p.m. The contest precedes the men's basketball matchup with Lenoir-Rhyne, scheduled for 7.
