Walk For Women Registration Form
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Join the East Carolina women's basketball team in a 1.5-mile walk to support breast cancer awareness. The third-annual Walk For Women, part of ECU's "Pink Zone" Initiative, will take place Saturday, Feb. 20. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at Gate 1 of Minges Coliseum and breakfast will be provided by Panera.
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) began the WBCA Pink Zone, formerly known as "Think Pink," in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. In 2007, more than 120 schools contributed to make the inaugural year a success. The following season, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching more than 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer research. The 2009 campaign exceeded $1.5 million in donations, involved 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations, and saw more than 56 schools break attendance records at their events.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund in memory of ECU Alumna and late N.C. State head women's basketball coach Kay Yow. The organization is a 501 c(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.
The Lady Pirates' contest against Tulsa at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, will serve as part of the "Pink Zone" week. Fans who participate in the Walk For Women will receive a free ticket to the baseball game against Virginia at 1 p.m. Saturday as well as the women's basketball tilt Sunday.
