Pirates Finish Fourth At JU Invitational

PONTE VERDA BEACH, Fla. - The East Carolina men's golf team finished the third and final round of the JU Invitational at the par 72 PLAYERS Stadium Course in fourth place.
ECU carded a final score of 901 (307-304-305) to finish the event four strokes ahead of fifth-place Charleston Southern and Liberty, but 15 strokes behind third-place Clemson. ECU finished the first round in third place, but Wake Forest surged ahead of the Pirates after round two.
East Tennessee State, who was in second place after the first round, moved past Clemson in round two and claimed the team title by finishing seven strokes ahead of the Wake Forest. The Deacons' Brendan Gielow claimed individual medalist honors, carding a three-round total of 218 (76-69-73).
David Watkins led the Pirates in the event, concluding his efforts in the two-day event with a 54-hole tally of 12-over par 228 (79-74-75) which left him tied for 15th place.
In total, three Pirates ended the event in the top 22. Jake Colley tallied a three-round score of 229 (67-84-89) to finish in a tie for 19th. Colley led the tournament after 18 holes firing a first round five-under 67. Harold Varner finished one stroke behind Colley with a 14-over 230 (81-74-75) in 22nd place.
Conner Sock finished tied for 37th with a 22-over 238 (84-72-82) and Matt Sterling placed 54th with a 26-over 242 (82-83-77).
The Pirates will return to the links on March 1 by participating in the Seahawk Intercollegiate in Wilmington, N.C.
