GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina Pirates conducted their second official spring workout with a three-hour practice late Wednesday afternoon inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
After beginning camp with a pair of introductory workouts in shorts and helmets, first-year ECU Head Coach Ruffin McNeill and his staff will direct the Pirates' first full-pad session Friday afternoon.
McNeill remained in an evaluation mode throughout Wednesday's practice, which was held in near-perfect conditions with temperatures in the low 70s. ECU spent the session emphasizing positional fundamentals while slowly working towards grasping initial concepts of offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley and defensive coordinator Brian Mitchell's new schemes.
"Overall, I'd call it a good start," McNeill said of the first two days in shorts. "I thought our attention level was better Monday and I was disappointed in the way we finished today, but we addressed and will continue to address that. The ability for us to understand the three major intangibles are critical to the progress we will make. Our mental toughness, competitive spirit and effort level will define this team."
East Carolina will follow Friday's first full-gear practice with a similar session Saturday morning before returning to work next week.
NOTES: East Carolina will conduct its annual Senior Pro Timing Day Thursday ... A total of 27 players (26 who wrapped up their eligibility after the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in January and DT Linval Joseph, who opted to forego his senior year to declare for the draft) will undergo testing in the Murphy Center and on Hight Field in front of an expected group of 30-plus scouts representing National Football League and other professional franchises ... In addition to Joseph, DE C.J. Wilson, DT Jay Ross and P Matt Dodge have been included in many pre-draft publications as potential picks in April ... The latest evaluation on DT Michael Brooks' right knee injury determined the sophomore will likely miss the remainder of spring drills.
