GREENVILLE, N.C. - Former East Carolina defensive tackle Kwaku (KWAY-koo) Danso, an international student-athlete who spent three years primarily serving on the Pirates' scout team roster, has agreed to terms with the Cleveland Browns on a free agent contract according to a release by the National Football League organization late Monday.
The 6-foot-5, 336-pound Ghana, Africa native earned the opportunity to play professionally after participating in the Browns' rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis during the weekend of April 30-May 1.
Danso, 28, officially opened his ECU football career in 2007 as a walk-on but did not experience varsity action until last fall when he appeared in three games during the Pirates' run towards their second-straight Conference USA title. However, he was not credited with any tackles during playing stints against West Virginia, Virginia Tech and Tulsa while serving as one of New York Giants second-round draft choice Linval Joseph's top backups at the tackle position.
In addition to earning two football letters for his contributions to the scout squad, Danso excelled in the classroom with selection to the ECU Athletic Director's Honor Roll in 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 as a construction management major.
Danso's 2005 enrollment at East Carolina followed graduation from the Opoku Ware School in Kumasi, Ghana.
He joins running back Dominique Lindsay (Tennessee Titans), defensive tackle Jay Ross (New Orleans Saints) and center Sean Allen (Buffalo Bills) on the list of Pirates who have signed free agent contracts with NFL organizations this spring.
