HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. - After throwing 10 innings and not allowing a run, rising sophomore Joseph Hughes was named the Rawlings Coastal Plain League Co-Pitcher of the Week according to an announcement by league officials Monday. Hughes is playing for the Asheboro Copperheads this summer.
In 10 innings pitched during the fifth week of Coastal Plain action, Hughes scattered four hits and struck out 13 batters while issuing only three walks. He threw a complete-game shutout against Forest City July 1 as the Copperheads won 5-0. In a relief appearance June 28 against Martinsville, Hughes retired all three batters he faced in the eighth inning.
Overall, Hughes has posted a 3-2 record in five starts and has pitched Asheboro's only complete game. He has a 2.41 earned-run average and has recorded 31 strikeouts in 33.2 innings pitched. Opponents are batting .215 against him.
Last season with the Pirates, Hughes went 1-1 in eight appearances, including four starts. He picked up the win against Gardner-Webb, tossing five-and-two-thirds innings, scattering nine hits and allowing a pair of earned runs while striking out five. For the year, he surrendered 19 earned runs and fanned 13.
Hughes shared this week's award with Gastonia's Robert Jeroszko, who threw a complete-game shutout against Thomasville July 3. The junior from College of Charleston gave up two hits, walked a pair and struck out 11 in the nine-inning effort. The Rawlings Coastal Plain League Hitter-of-the-Week was Joe Sclafani of Morehead City. Sclafani, a sophomore at Dartmouth, batted .455 with 10 hits, four RBIs and six runs scored.
