
Volleyball Concludes Wake Forest Challenge

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The East Carolina volleyball team closes play at the Wake Forest Black/Gold Challenge Saturday, squaring off against West Virginia and the host Demon Deacons at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
The Pirates held a 2-1 advantage after three sets in Friday's match, but Campbell rallied to post a 3-2 (25-23, 24-26, 27-29, 25-23, 15-13) victory. Wake Forest cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Mountaineers in yesterday's nightcap.
Junior Amanda Lutzow picked up her second double-double of the season, racking up 16 kills and 16 digs. Freshman Shelby Beasley set her career high in the back row as she collected a team-high 19 digs. Additionally, senior Marina Gusman-Brown was credited with 18 digs, her personal best in an ECU uniform, while Nicole Jones also reached double figures with 12. At the net, redshirt sophomore Kelly Derby registered seven blocks while freshman Kasey Kavanaugh handed out 43 assists in her debut at setter.
The Camels enjoyed the advantage in hitting (.173-.119) and kills (64-56), but East Carolina came out on top on defense, picking up 78 digs to the Camels' 75, as well as blocking (9.0-6.0).
The Pirates play their final nonconferece contests next weekend, Sept. 17-18, taking part in the Georgetown Clasic in Washington, D.C. ECU will face Furman at 7 p.m. Friday before endng the event with matches against the host Hoyas and Binghamton Saturday.
