NEWARK, Del. - After dropping a 3-1 decision to Rutgers Friday, the East Carolina volleyball team returns to Barbara Viera Court today for a pair of matches against Delaware and Sam Houston State at the Delaware Invitational. The Pirates will face off against the Blue Hens at 12 noon before returning to meet the Bearkats at 5 p.m.
Junior Jackie Varnum led the Pirates with a career high 12 kills with no errors on 17 attempts for a mark of .706 against the Scarlet Knights, while redshirt sophomore Kelly Derby picked up a personal -best 11 blocks. Additionally, freshman Shelby Beasley matched her career standard with 13 digs and added two service aces.
ECU held the upper hand in hitting, .158-.156, and blocking , 13.0-3.0, but Rutgers ended up with a slight 47-46 advantage in digs. Andrea Queck set her personal best with 29 assists while Whitney Campbell racked up eight digs for a career high mark. The Pirates were also plagued by service errors, committing 13.
In Friday's second contest, Delaware took a 3-1 decision over Sam Houston State after the match was tied at one set apiece. The Blue Hens received 17 kills each from Katie Dennehy and Alissa Alker while Jess Chason dished out 44 assists for an average of 11 per set. For the Bearkats, Carli Kolbe led the offense with 12 kills and Kim Black owned the net with seven blocks.
Delaware outhit Sam Houston State .234 to .115 and also had the advantage in defense, picking up 68 digs as compared to 51 for the Bearkats.
After today's matches, East Carolina will head to Winston-Salem, N.C., Friday for the Wake Forest Black and Gold Challenge Sept. 10-11. The Pirates are scheduled to face Campbell in the first match of the tournament at 4:30 p.m. Friday before completing the event with matches against West Virginia and the host Demon Deacons Saturday.
